A Farewell to the Nightfire Blog

There’s no horror like the horror of saying goodbye.

All terrible, wonderful things must come to an end, and the current incarnation of the Tor Nightfire website is no exception. It’s been a wonderful three years, but it’s time for me to move on to the next terrifying adventure.

Going forward, the site will be more news-focused (Nightfire book announcements, ebook sales, excerpts, and the like). The title catalog will continue to live here, of course, so you’ll have all the information you need on forthcoming Nightfire books. And all the wonderful features, lists, reviews, interviews, and essays we’ve run over the years will be right here where you left them, ready to refer to whenever you need a recommendation for, say, a book about creepy dolls, or a how-to guide for writing crossover horror.

As for me, I’ll be leaving Nightfire (and Tor) at the end of the month. It’s time for me to pursue some personal projects and take some much-needed downtime. I’m not leaving the horror world, though–I’ll still be writing for Vulture, Tor.com, and elsewhere. My horror newsletter may or may not be in the process of reanimating, and you can find me on Twitter and Instagram.

And for those of you who love the annual horror new releases list, good news – I’m continuing that project on my own website. The 2023 list is here.

Thank you to all the authors and writers who contributed their work, talent, and expertise to the Nightfire blog–it’s been an honor working with each and every one of you. Thank you to anyone who’s shared what we’ve published or left a kind word in the comments. And thank you to the team at Nightfire–some of the most incredible people I’ve worked with in a publishing career spanning 12 years. I’ll miss them terribly, and fully plan on haunting them.

If you’ve read and loved something by an author here, the best way to say thank you is to buy one of their books. If you’ve read and loved something by a contributing writer, follow them on social media and read what they publish elsewhere. And don’t forget to check out the horror coverage over at our big sister, Tor.com–they have a damn fine eye for scares.

And, of course, Nightfire will continue to publish incredible horror books. Next year alone, you can expect books from Alison Rumfitt, Johnny Compton, Lucy Snyder, Leopoldo Gout, T. Kingfisher, Ness Brown, Cassandra Khaw, CJ Leede, Liz Kerin, Philip Fracassi, Chuck Tingle, and Catriona Ward–with more to be announced!

So don’t worry too much–it’s not really goodbye. It’s more see you around–around 3am, probably. You’ll know it’s time by the sounds of jagged fingernails digging into the floorboards under your bed. See you there.

  5. Than you so much for the annual list. I curate the horror section for an independent bookstore and it is absolutely invaluable to me. I can start reading early to choose favorites by December and each book I read ends up in my personal library. I’m glad to hear the list will go on as will your recommendations. Good luck in your new ventures!
