Red Rabbit by Alex Grecian, coming from Nightfire in September 2023!
A ragtag posse tracks down the infamous witch Sadie Grace through a wild west beset by demons and ghosts, in this folk horror epic where death is always just around the bend.
Sadie Grace is wanted for witchcraft, dead (or alive). And every hired gun in Kansas is out to collect the bounty on her head, including bonafide witch hunter Old Tom and his mysterious mute ward Rabbit.
On the road to Burden County, they’re joined by two vagabond cowboys with a strong sense of adventure, but no sense of purpose, and a recently widowed schoolteacher with nothing left to lose. But as their posse grows, so too does the danger.
Racing along the drought-stricken plains in a stolen red stagecoach, they encounter monsters more wicked than witches lurking along the dusty trail. But the crew is determined to collect the bounty on that witch, or die trying.
Here’s what Alex Grecian has to say:
“My great-great-grandfather made the trip from Texas to Kansas to collect a bounty on a witch, but she hollowed him out and turned him into a scarecrow. My family has been feuding with her family ever since. It’s just one of those pieces of family history that you suddenly realize would make an interesting story if someone finally wrote it down. (I’m willing to swear to that story as fact, but it’s also possible that the first sentence of Red Rabbit just popped into my head while I was in the shower and wouldn’t leave until I did something with it.)”
From Kelly Lonesome, executive editor at Tor Nightfire:
“Alex Grecian writing a historical folk horror just makes SO much sense to me, and I am very excited to bring his work to the Nightfire audience!
Red Rabbit follows a colorful cast of characters (whom I’ve affectionately dubbed The Red Coach Clan) on a journey of misadventures from Texas to Kansas. It’s like Lonesome Dove, but swap the cattle drive for a witch hunt, and the threat of snakes and scorpions on the trail for ghouls and demons.
The trials and tribulations the Red Coach Clan endures on their quest to kill Sadie Grace often feels like something straight out of a Coen Brothers film – they are constantly evading danger and death with every new town they ride through, whether they’re aware of it or not. But my favorite part of Red Rabbit is the way Alex has captured that dusty cadence of cowboys and the way they can spin a yarn. This is a story you can truly enjoy the journey of – it pairs great with two fingers of whiskey – and it’s bursting with Americana folklore and send-ups to supernatural tropes while still being a tense and thrilling (coach)ride!
Welcome to the coven, Alex! We’re mighty glad to have ya.”
